Description
The $29M Iron Horse Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road is a 340-foot, cable-stayed bridge that provides a safe, grade-separated crossing over one of San Ramon’s busiest corridors. Anchored by 900 feet of MSE wall approaches, it eliminates a previously signaled crossing and completes a vital link in the 30-mile regional Iron Horse Trail system. The new bridge serves as a both a physical and symbolic gateway at the heart of the city defined by a V-shaped steel pylon and bent steel edge girders, connecting City Hall, the library, Bishop Ranch, and the City Center development.
The design emphasized constructability, fabrication efficiency, and minimal field disruption. Key strategies, such as simple foundations, modular steel plate components, full-depth precast deck panels, and an efficient yet aesthetic railing system, streamlined construction, reduced duration and cost, and minimized temporary work. The stainless-steel mesh and cables for the railing and throw fence provide durability and resilience. The structure design focused on the use of simple/standard bridge elements with long service lives and replaceable details.
Extensive drainage and stormwater management planning ensured long-term site resilience, effectively managing runoff within tight parameters and supporting climate adaptation goals. These features reduce heat island effects, improve air quality, and provide shaded, inviting public spaces that encourage walking, biking, and community gathering. Spanning approximately 1,200 feet, the ADA-compliant overcrossing integrates gentle ramps, wide paths, stairs, and native landscaping. The project integrated context-sensitive landscaping with over 7,000 native and drought-tolerant plants and 80 trees along with community gathering spaces enhanced by architectural lighting. The resulting landmark not only improves trail safety and connectivity but also reflects San Ramon’s commitment to sustainable, community-oriented design.
The programmable multi-color concert quality LED lighting system transforms the bridge into a dynamic nighttime landmark capable of celebrating holidays, community events, or awareness campaigns. The lighting also provides enhanced safety and visibility for trail users without creating glare for roadway traffic.
The Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing stands as a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable community asset that reflects San Ramon’s forward-thinking vision. Its iconic form strengthens the city’s identity and contributes a signature landmark within the urban landscape. More than a bridge, it creates an enduring public space that enhances mobility, safety, and quality of life for residents of all ages—serving the community today and for generations to come.
