Westley, CA @ Interstate 5 – Asphalt Replacement with Concrete Pavers

Located in Westley, California at exit 441 on I-5, Howard Road handles a tremendous amount of heavy truck traffic. The Stanislaus Public Works Department was faced with the challenge of designing a long-term, economical pavement solution for the frontage road. Given that the asphalt pavement had failed, the County looked at interlocking concrete pavers as the innovative solution. Given design parameters of an R-value of <5 for the subgrade soils and a Traffic Index of 11, the Public Works staff designed the pavement section that called for the 80 millimeter thick concrete pavers in a herringbone laying pattern. The pavement section required 14 inches of compacted Caltrans Class 2 aggregate and a layer of biaxial geogrid installed over the compacted subgrade for additional structural support. Stanislaus County received six bids ranging from $4.50 to $6.00/sf to install the concrete pavers. Earth Shelter Developers was awarded the concrete paver installation. With […]

East Campbell Avenue Portals Project (Finalist)

In Campbell, the East Campbell Avenue Portals Project transformed East Campbell Avenue under the Highway 17 overcrossing from a dark, uncomfortable pathway with narrow sidewalks and bike lanes to a welcoming multimodal facility with widened bicycle lanes and separated pedestrian portals on both sides of Campbell Avenue. The project removed curtain abutment walls and installed new retaining and tie-back walls to provide 26-foot wide portal openings behind existing abutment walls. Benefits to the general public include better bicycle and pedestrian connectivity for residents through the underpass; public art, terraced landscaping, and ornate columns; more comfortable walkway separated from moving traffic and running between the Historic Downtown/Downtown Campbell Light Rail Station and the PruneYard Shopping Center and residences on Union Avenue and east of Bascom Avenue. The Portals Project has opened up a new, functional, and beautiful entrance to Downtown Campbell.

Main Street Rehabilitation Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The City of Placerville Main Street Rehabilitation Project was designed, bid, and constructed in three phases, each with its own unique challenges: Phase 1A – Water Line Replacement, Phase 1B – Sewer Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining, and Phase 2 – Pavement Rehabilitation and Streetscape SUSTAINABILITY The construction of the new water main and water services eliminated the need for continuous water system repairs and all of the old system’s water leaks and losses. An average water system has approximately 10% losses. Based on the observed conditions of the existing system, it was apparent that the water losses were in excess of 10%. Therefore, the new water system should conserve over 10% of previous water usage. The installation of the CIPP sewer pipe eliminated the need for continuous sewer main repairs. By eliminating the cracks and leaky joints, seepage and groundwater pollution were greatly reduced. Lighted bollards […]
