Pacific Avenue & Burchett Street Wastewater Capacity and Street Improvements Project

Pacific Avenue & Burchett Street Wastewater Capacity and Street Improvements Project was completed in December 2016. The work was performed on Pioneer Drive between Kenilworth Avenue and Pacific Avenue; Pacific Avenue between Pioneer Drive and Burchett Street; and Burchett Street between Pacific Avenue and First Alley West of Central Avenue in the City of Glendale, California. The project involved the removal and replacement of concrete curbs and gutters on Burchett Street; selective removal and repair of broken and damaged curbs and gutters, driveway and alley approaches, sidewalks, and deteriorated asphaltic concrete pavement; installation and reconstruction of curb ramps meeting current Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines; surface grinding of existing asphalt concrete pavement; placement of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix surface course; upsizing of approximately 2,930 linear feet of sanitary sewer main; selective removal and repair of sanitary sewer main; modification of traffic signal systems at ten intersections; installation of fiber optic communication system; installation of pavement striping, sharrows, and other pavement markings; and the removal of fifteen dead or declining trees and planting of 35 new street trees. Purpose and Benefits of Project Pacific Avenue remains an important and busy arterial in the City of Glendale, the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County with a population of over 200,000 residents. There is high-density housing in the vicinity. Pacific Avenue serves many commuters traversing the City from north to south and vice versa. The street also serves as an alternate route for commuters wishing to avoid Brand Boulevard and Central Avenue. Both streets are considered some of the busiest in in Glendale. One of the purposes of the Pacific Avenue & Burchett Street Wastewater Capacity and Street Improvements Project was to upsize the sewer main. An increase in sewage-carrying capacity was needed as a result of recent development and expansion of commercial properties on Central Avenue, a neighboring street equally busy and paralleling Pacific Avenue. The realignment at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Broadway was implemented as a traffic calming measure. Bump outs at the intersection of Burchett and Columbus helped to reduce crossing distances for pedestrians. Also, the reduction of street widths at the intersection has also discouraged speeding. In addition, at some intersections, curb radii were reduced so that pedestrians now have a shorter distance in crossing from one street to another thus reducing danger in the intersection. The flow of traffic has improved due to the widening of the north bound lane at Pacific Avenue and Colorado Street. As part of this project, all ramps were updated to reflect current American with Disabilities Act standards. http://glendaleca.gov/government/departments/public-works/projects/current-/pacific-avenue-burchett-street-wastewater-capacity-and-street-improvements-project
