The California Incline Bridge is a major connector street, beginning atop the steep slopes of Pacific Palisades Park and carrying vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists down to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) at the base of the bluffs near Santa Monica State Beach. The project resurfaced a total of 110 City blocks (32 lane miles) using 17,000 tons of rubberized asphalt (ARHM), which uses crumb rubber from recycled tires – a total of 340,000 discarded tires were recycled for this project. The bridge is listed in the Caltrans Historic Bridge Inventory as a Category 1 Historic Bridge. The bridge is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP 75000499). The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic due to possibility of “catastrophic collapse”. Paved roads deteriorate over time based on traffic, weather, sunlight, and other factors.
