Enhanced Pothole Repair Program

The City of San Diego Streets Division developed and implemented a new and improved system for pothole repair in response to a 2013 Performance Audit of the Pothole Repair Operation. Prior to the Enhanced Pothole Repair Program, City pothole crews would travel all throughout the City of San Diego responding in real-time to constituent complaints. Under this approach communities who lodged more complaints would often receive a much larger share of services. This method also meant that crews were racing to and from pothole repairs, and wouldn’t have the time to look holistically at the entire street to fill additional potholes that were not requested. The Enhanced Pothole Repair Program shifted most crews from the complaint-based system to regional deployment strategy in order to reduce redundant trips. Now the City’s pothole crews spend one day a week in each district proactively looking for and repairing potholes along full stretches of City streets.
